2009 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Leadership Awards announced

Sonya Stephens, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, has announced Professor Howard Rosenbaum and Mark Napier as the recipients of the fifth Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Leadership Award, given in support and recognition of a collaborative research project intended to add to knowledge about learning and teaching on the IU Bloomington campus. Funds available for the award generally total $35,000.

Rosenbaum and Napier, both from the School of Library and Information Science, received this year's award for their project: "What are the effects of video podcasting and student-generated podcasting knowledge base on learning, teaching, and technical support in a hands-on computer and information literacy course?"

Rosenbaum and Napier will collaborate with Dr. Kiduk Yang (SLIS), SLIS doctoral students Cameron Tuai and Mohammad Chuttur, and SLIS web coordinator Dale Wray in order to study the use of video podcasting as a tool for learning and instruction from the perspectives of students, faculty and staff. The SOTL Leadership Award funds will be used to conduct a comparative research study intended to evaluate student learning outcomes and course satisfaction in the Computer-Based Information Tools class. Sections of this hands-on information literacy course, coordinated by Dr. Yang, will have access to a student-generated video podcast knowledge base created in past classes and intended to help current students successfully complete their assignments.

The project seeks to better understand how podcasting changes teaching, learning, and the work of those supporting the system. The study will generate a pedagogical module for teaching podcasting to students, a workflow that automates the podcasting production process, and a searchable podcasting knowledge base. These will serve as a model for other schools and departments interested in using podcasting and similar technologies as a method of supporting peer learning.

Rosenbaum and Napier's model is designed to be both scalable and adaptable to courses across campus, make podcasting potentially available to hundreds or even thousands of students. Their project thus promises to have a sustained impact on teaching, learning, and instructional development on campus, while at the same time advancing SOTL research methods as yet another avenue for the assessment of information literacy, which is one of the shared goals of the general education requirements to be implemented in 2011.
